It's official

Got this from Mr. Smooth, my source for all the inside Caps info:

Fans can welcome the Washington Capitals back to the ice at the first day of 2006 training camp on Friday, Sept. 15, at the Ashburn Ice House in Ashburn, Va. Practices begin at 10 a.m. with the first of two groups of players taking the ice. All on-ice workouts will be open to the public and free of charge.

I know Fred is already planning on his usual day off for the first day of training camp. "Aren't you taking that day off too?" Even though it's a Friday, for once, and thus very tempting, no. Love my Caps and all, but the first day of training camp is not a holiday.

Dan Snyder take note: this is what a good owner does. Yes, some could argue that the Redskins scrimmages were free, too, but the Caps aren't charging $25 for parking. I can hear it already: the Maryland fans will be bitching about going to Ashburn. And they think going to Arlington is bad! They had it great for a long time- Piney Orchard was a crappy facility and in the middle of nowhere, but more convenient for the Maryland peeps (well, some of them, anyway). But since most of the fans are coming from this side of DC, it makes sense to put the rink over here. Can't argue with logic (though I'm sure they will). Sorry, no sympathy here.

Did anyone else think this was a little weird? OK, the first part about the suicide was sad, but I'm talking about this:

An avid amateur cyclist, Witt met Landis through a mutual coach in 1998 and at one point the two shared an apartment in San Diego, Henson said. It was Witt who introduced Landis to his future wife and has been credited with introducing Landis _ a former mountain biker _ to the world of road racing. Witt and Landis served as best man at each other's weddings, Henson said. Witt married Amber Landis' mother Rose, a schoolteacher, a short time after the younger couple married in 2000.

Sooo...Witt introduces Landis to his future wife, and then marries the future wife's mother? Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it just seemed a little odd. Then there's the whole thing about the potential reasons for the suicide; it doesn't help that Witt's restaurant is tied to Landis' image, which is now tainted. Sad, very sad.

And look who else made the paper. My favorite guy, Marcus Vick!

"I can play any position," Vick said. "I did it all the time growing up. . . . My confidence has always been there. I will never lose that."

Oh, what a surprise. He's confident? I never would have guessed.

Over the years, he said, Michael Vick has provided him with hard throws, fancy cars and, most recently, tough love. Vick said his older brother gave him a Lexus and Cadillac while he was in school, and an earful after he was banished from the team in January.

I can only imagine how insufferable this guy must have been in college, tooling around in a Lexus and a Caddy. "My brother's Michael Vick." I hate name-droppers.

Whether Vick will spend this season with the Dolphins or the Canadian Football League's Toronto Argonauts, who hold his rights in Canada, remains unclear. Judging by his sparse play at quarterback and the number of athletes competing there -- the Dolphins acquired Culpepper, Joey Harrington and Lemon in the offseason -- he has almost no hope of entrenching himself at that position.

Aw, boo hoo. Well, I'll give Vick a little credit; at least he's trying and he hasn't done anything dumb lately.

What are you talking about? The opening of Training camp is a holiday. Maybe one of these you can make it with me.

Ashburn is out there, but at least this time I don't have to grab a bit to eat at at gas station. The only problem is that this may be a mob scene. The middle of nowhere keep the casual fans away. This is in the middle of the Tech corridor.

Honey as for Marcus Vick I don't think he was strutting around name dropping his brother. The way he has acted sounds like he though he was the second coming. Maybe getting kicked off the team might have instilled some humility, but I doubt it.

I've hated Marcus Vick since the day he stomped on Elvis Dumerville's leg during the Gator Bowl. Marcus will never amount to anything in the NFL, then what is he going to do since he basically blew off education thinking that just because his last name was Vick he would be a shoe-in to the NFL, boy was he wrong.

As for Michael, I think he gets way too much press. In fact I named him the NFL's most overrated player on my blog. His six years in the league he's put of qb numbers that other qb's wouldn't as so much get mentioned. Way too much hype to him.

totally agree with Brad.

I also have a problem with the Toronto Argos. Why do they have to pick up the big name problem childs? How did the Ricky Williams signing go?

Brad, you're preaching to the choir; I said pretty much the same thing about both Vicks :-)

My brother mentioned this quote he saw by a columnist:
"Ricky Williams, playing in the CFL for Toronto, tested positive for a broken arm."

Speaking of the Toronto Argonauts, did you know that Leo Cahill took over the head coaching job after their 1976 CFL season?

My $0.02.

Whats up with all the Vick hating???? Mike Vick is a freak of nature and you can't blame him for a head coach who won't let him air it out down the field. Its a ball control offense based on running backs....Marcus vick is still pretty talented and at the end of the day he's only frickin 21yrs old. I hate the crap he's done but I have a strong suspicion that he's learned a lesson this past year......
