DC gets Real respect

DC United played a good game against Real Madrid on Wednesday, eventually coming to a 1-1 tie. The Seattle paper made this note about the match:

Wednesday's crowd, though, was much less raucous than the Man U-Celtic crowd. Though there was a consistent buzz throughout the stadium it didn't approach high noise levels.

Gee, I wonder why? Any time you've got a Man U game, there's going to be brawls, much less a Man U-Celtic matchup. There's hardly any bad blood between DC United and Real Madrid; they just aren't in the same league, in any sense of the word.

Because of the short preparation time that allowed for only a few days, fewer of the hardcore Real Madrid fans were able to make it to Seattle, leaving more opportunity for fans who may not have been fervent Madrid supporters.

Sorry, I just don't buy it. The hardcore fans were there, come hell or high water. DC United's Screaming Eagles had a contingent, of course. And the Real Madrid/David Beckham fans were out in force. It's just a lame excuse for the lack of goons in the stands. (Which is not necessarily a bad thing, just makes things less interesting.)

How about these guys:

John Prior and Mike Barbour left Vancouver at 5 a.m. and started their own pregame festivities in Pioneer Square. However, they were very civil despite their state, gaining notoriety more for their attire than any sort of offensive behavior. Dressed entirely in pirate garb, Prior and Barbour carried a stuffed dog wearing a D.C. United T-shirt and allowed any fan wearing a Real Madrid shirt to kick it -- "Just like we are going to kick United," Prior said before the game.

Nice. Sorry it didn't work out that way, guys. I would have preferred DC United to win, obviously, but I'm glad they at least got the tie. It says a lot about the team that they were able to do that, anyway. No wonder they're the #1 team in MLS right now.

Beckham's reward today came in the form of being dropped from England by new manager Steve McLaren.

United did better than represent well Wednesday night. Their level of play was outstanding. It was great to see:

A) an MLS team play that way, and ...
B) that MLS team being the one I root for.

And, it made me more mad about the RSL loss.

(these word verification deals need to buy a vowel)

I'm sure you get this crap all the time but I mean it.... it's just darn cool to read a chick who's knowledgeable about sports.

Not a Skins fan, but gimme the Caps & United any day. Rock on.

I just found your page -- after first discovering DC Centers. I though I'd add my kudos, Very enjoyable -- lots of fun. I've been writing about the Nationals and DC United on my page -- I don't plan to be much beyond that, as I'm not a fan of the other Washington teams (though I will have to start hitting Caps games to see Ovechkin play).

Anyway, I really enjoyed your comments on the Real Madrid game. I look forward to reading more on United. Maybe, I'll see you at RFK on Wednesday, or this weekend?
