A good start

If the U.S. Basketball team plays an exhibition game in Las Vegas, does anyone care?

Using a sensational defensive effort to overcome a slow start, the Americans overwhelmed the Puerto Ricans 114-69 on Thursday night in their lone exhibition game on home soil before the world championships...A 31-2 run spanning halftime blew open the game and sent the U.S. on its way to avenging a 92-73 loss to Puerto Rico at the 2004 Olympics -- perhaps the most embarrassing moment in U.S. basketball history.

Will the U.S. ever live it down? Eh, probably not.

Cheered on by a group of flag-waving fans at the Thomas & Mack Center, Puerto Rico pulled ahead 33-29 while the Americans went scoreless for more than 3 minutes to open the second quarter.

That IS a little surprising. Wonder what happened there?

The Americans had a whopping 21-1 advantage in points off turnovers at halftime over the Puerto Ricans, whose jerseys featured the Burger King logo.

And we care about the BK logo why, exactly?

Getting mostly dunks, the U.S. shot 70 percent (14-of-20) in the third quarter to build an 83-48 lead. After allowing 26 points in the first quarter, the Americans gave up a total of 22 in the middle two.

zzzzzzzz. While dunks are impressive, a long series of them are boring after a while. Ooh, there goes Lebron again. Wow, Carmelo can really slam it down. Whoop-de-doo, like we don't already know that. I like seeing a team play like a team. At least this group seems a little more cohesive than the aforementioned 2004 Olympic squad- they were the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked.

This was the best part of the article:

Perhaps stemming from Duke's upset victory over undefeated UNLV in the 1991 Final Four, U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski drew quite a few boos during pregame introductions.

Yes, people have long memories, but 15 years? There are additional reasons for the booing. Coach K isn't exactly a beloved guy in most parts of the country.

I'm as patriotic as they come, but Coach K's involvement with the USA Basketball team puts my interest squarely into the "neutral" category. I don't care whether the team wins or loses while he's coach.

I agree with "caps nut" but have only one differing opinion. I hope they fall flat on their face. I hate anything from Puke.

Though I do like the Wiz kids. Torn, but my hate for Puke overcomes.

I grew up a Runnin Rebels fan....Back in the day they were the team everybody rooted for because they beat you silly and didn't shake your hands afterwards. I admire that "Sportmanship"....That bastard ruined the record of one of the greatest collegiate teams of all time...I boo...Pain works like that....
