Rockin' the Phone Booth

I'm watching the Caps game on Comcast right now (I SO wish I could be there, but Chanuck is there in my stead) and loving the fact that I can hear the "Euro Style Supporters Group" (they have to get a better name) on the broadcast. Chanuck is sitting with them in 414 and having even more fun than he imagined. After all, the group combines two of his favorite sports: hockey and soccer. He wondered if they were placed in that section on purpose, since it's directly under the press box; I'd have to think that it was a deliberate move.

Anyway, the Locker just made a comment about how much louder the Verizon Center is tonight and how surprised he is; he said it's even louder than last Saturday's game. This is a clear sign that Barra Brava needs to come to every Caps game. I swear I'm going to get to one of these games, even if I have to skip the radio show. This game is turning out to be a thriller. Plus, how doofy does Kerry Fraser look with a helmet (as opposed to his hair helmet)? He's taking the helmet off every chance he gets. I heart Donald Brashear (congrats to him on his first goal with the Caps, and what a goal!) and want to give him a big hug, like a teddy bear.

Ted posted a new Owner's Corner on the Caps website today. It was an interesting one, since he talks extensively about blogging and its role for the Caps. Ted really does believe that blogs have a significant impact on spreading the word about the team, as opposed to the MSM; we talked a lot about it when I was in his suite in November.

How about this comment from Ovechkin to Dan Steinberg:

05) Alex Ovechkin on Gilbert: "He's unbelievable. He's terrific shooter and he's unbelievable."

06) Ovechkin on why he was at last night's Georgetown game: "I love basketball. I love Washington Wizards and Georgetown." [Favorite team?] "Georgetown. I like. Because I live in Washington." [And Maryland?] "Maryland? I've never seen Maryland. I like Georgetown."

I wish Ovie had better taste in college basketball teams, but this is the same guy who wore an all-red outfit (including the shoes). So there's room for improvement. And it's funny that he said that about Gilbert Arenas, since Gilbert (or anyone else) could make the exact same statement about him.

I came in second in Awful Announcing's college bowl pick 'em contest, after a sort-of tie between Mini-Me and Bosox Siobhan. At least I'm in good company there. Thanks to AwfulAnnouncing for hosting the contest!

Just got home. What a night. Game was obviously awesome, and we had a crew of about 75 in 414. Even made the notes in the AP recap. :)

I'm sure we will be doing another game soon. I wish we could get to every one, but with what we already lay out for DCU tickets, that's probably not possible. But 414 was a great vantage point, and we definitely got the media's attention. And we didn't get too many dirty looks - save for some Flyer fans who didn't like the sweeping broom motion I was making for the last 12 minutes or so.

Or maybe it was the Pelle Lindbergh song. Aye, who knows.

the "Euro Style Supporter's Group" does have a name--They're Barra Brava. I was sitting where I couldn't see them, but I could hear them. It was freakin' great!

Too bad...no offense to Ovechkin, but he probably only watches Georgetown because 1) they play at Verizon Center 2) the Caps and the Hoyas have a marketing deal of sorts with that Caps-Hoyas ticket deal and has sort of an odd obligation to support that (thanks Ted, grrr!)

Oh well, not like it matters in the end. As long as he's not a Cowboys fan (or almost as bad...an Eagles fan! hehe)

Dude! I was totally going to go to that. God I'm a spaz. Next time you guys go, can you let me know?

I have a feeling Ovechkin's mom would appreciate watching the Maryland women play.

Big news SportsChick. I've almost been convinced, maybe 80% of the way, that attending a hockey game might be enjoyable. This is huge coming from a guy who has long considered there to only be three major sports.

Is it Ovechkin? No...Give me Donald Brashear any day. I may only read about the Caps in the Post each morning, but every tale of Brashear imprinting his knuckles on some sap's face brings a tear to my eye.

I will ask you, who knows more about this sport. So we have the most badass guy in the league?

Whoa! That IS amazing, Captain! Brashear is easily one of the most fun players to watch on the ice. Yes, he's one of the best fighters out there; just punches guys to a pulp. It's fantastic.
