I don't know why the NFL is entertaining but college football, after the initial excitement of the start of the season, quickly becomes irritating and obnoxious. Maybe it's because I went to a school that hasn't had a football team since 1967. Maybe it's because most college football fans are just a little too rabid for me. (Fred swears that most Virginia Tech fans have at least two pieces of VT flair on their cars.) Maybe it's because many college coaches/programs are disgustingly corrupt (yeah, I know, like the NFL isn't, but one expects it from the NFL). Whatever it is, I don't understand all the hype about college football. So that's why I enjoy articles like the one from today's Washington Times:
Jerry Fishman wasn't sorry then, and he's not sorry now. The Maryland Terrapins linebacker stepped away from fallen Navy quarterback Roger Staubach during a game in 1964 and made an obscene gesture to the Midshipmen in the stands.
Some things never change, huh?
"He told the fans he thought Maryland was No. 1 and got his fingers wrong," said Staubach, joking.
And because of that gesture, Navy hasn't played Maryland in college football for 41 years. It'll be interesting to see how the game turns out on Saturday. I enjoy backstories like this one when it comes to college football; somehow, the favoritism/corruption/greed doesn't seem so bad when there's a history behind it.

How long does it take for the paint to wear off?
I never got into college ball either. (Maybe it's b/c my school was "fortunate" to be able to claim an intramural team?) But it does seem extraordinarily insane, barbaric & oddly, unsportslike. (I mean, me? I am totally civilized screaming for the QB to throw the damn ball while getting wing sauce on my shirt, ok!) Good story though, I agree that is what makes an otherwise insignificant game fun to watch.
okay, utah fans are lame. But nice photo. I actually enjoy college football a little but don't get into the nfl at all. Give me soccer, mlb, or nba.
