Cubs fans, the grounds crew hates you

Why am I not surprised by this? The two places I would expect to see this kind of behavior would be New York and Chicago.

With the Cubs so close to winning, fans littered Wrigley Field with plastic bottles, cups, and other debris Saturday after A.J. Pierzynski hit a two-out, ninth-inning homer to send the White Sox to an 8-6 victory.

Guess I can't blame them, though; I would have tried to throw some crap at Pierzynski myself. Loathe that guy.

Much of the anger apparently was directed at Cubs closer Ryan Dempster, who retired the first two batters in the ninth with the Cubs leading 6-5. But two straight batters then reached base ahead of Pierzynski's homer.

That sucks. No matter how bad your guy is doing (and believe me, it's been hard for my Nats lately), you don't throw stuff at him. Sure, it's frustrating and you're angry. But that's how the game goes sometimes. Throwing crap isn't going to help or change the game.

As for Pierzynski...my bullshit meter is going off big time.

"You don't want to see anyone throw anything on the field," Pierzynski said.

Yeah, at YOU.

"You understand when your guy hits a home run and they throw the home run ball back. But you don't expect them to throw cups and throw everything else. ... You fear for Jacque (Jones), you fear for Juan Pierre and you fear for the outfielders and you fear for some fans who aren't doing anything and they might have the opportunity to get hurt."

Right, like you care about the fans and if they get hurt. Give me a freakin' break! The guy wouldn't know empathy if it punched him in the face (and I wish it would- again).

I can't stand Pyrzienski either. I was secretly thrilled when Cubs catcher Michael Barrett punched him a couple months ago (although surprised too)!

Argh - I knew I spelled that wrong.

As a Cubs fan, I happily replay that punch over and over in head.

It is a shame about the fans throwing things on the field like that. I don't know what happened, when I lived there and religiously hung out in the Wrigley bleachers, we never really expected anything crazy like the Cubs to win.. we just loved to see them play.

The idea of "empathy" punching someone in the face is truly priceless! :)

But this whole thing goes back to my disdain for "sound bite" sports quotes in general. It's all a bunch of drab, canned, BS. It's why I do tend to like players like TO (sorry Fred) because they do say and think for themselves (even if poorly).

My $0.02.
