Ooh, smack!

Fred and I caught this moment live, while watching the DC United- New York Red Bulls game. After it happened, Fred turned to me with this look on his face like, "I can't believe he just did that!"

After scoring, Eskandarian, who missed most of last season with post-concussion syndrome, charged toward the United bench. From the sideline, Walker, who had yet to enter the game, flipped him a can of Red Bull, the energy drink created by an Austrian company that recently bought the operating rights to New York's MLS franchise.
Eskandarian popped it open, took a big swig and then spit the contents onto the turf.

It was surprising, to say the least. Went over well with the DC United fans, I'm sure, but it did not impress the coaches:

New York Coach Mo Johnston said afterward that he wasn't offended. United's coaching staff, however, was disappointed by the antic, which was written up in the game officials' report and could result in a fine.

Eh, they should lighten up a little; it didn't hurt anyone. But the incident surely didn't help tensions between the teams, which are at an all-time high (especially since DC United gave the Red Bulls a 4-1 drubbing yesterday, giving new meaning to the phrase spotted at United's opening day: "Red Bull gives us wins!"). Look for more fights between fans during and after the games (although hopefully nothing as bad as the fight that occurred on opening day outside of RFK). I'm a fan of words (smart ones, anyway) but not of violence; unfortunately, strong words often lead to violence. Oh well, that's what happens when you combine beer, losing teams, and macho men.

I was surprised that he did it, but I wasn't upset. I thought it was hilarious. I mean it is the MetroPukes,Red Bullshits, whatever, they suck and I like the rivalry. Hopefully Esko doesn't get fined. If so, I am sure there will be plenty of volunteers willing to help pay it.
