First a bit of a downer. Last night the Caps played the New York Islanders. During the game Islander Kevin Colley missed a check and went head first in the boards. He went down pretty hard and took a while to get up. He was helped off the ice and I initially thought he hurt his leg. Late today I checked out the news and there was a story about it. Check out this blurb.
Colley broke the fifth cervical vertebrae in his neck but there is no paralysis. The surgery will repair and stabilize his spine.
OK, who says that hockey players aren't the toughest out there. This guy tried to skate off the ice after bashing his head at high speed. Knowing this now I think it was a bit irresponsible for the medical staff to allow him to skate off the ice. He should have been implicated until he was x-rayed. Let's hope he is able to recover.
Well I guess the joke is on Houston. I mean when you name a team do you really think it is a good idea to base it off an online poll? If you do you get something like 1836. But what do you expect, nothing can compete with the name DC United. I can't wait to hear RFK booming with the DC United chants. Speaking of United, if you happen to be near RFK you may be able to check out the team practicing. They are in town for a couple days before the head to Florida for spring training.
Last thing that must be said is about the Capitals' Alex Ovechkin. He was honored by the NHL today. He was named Offensive Player of the Month and Rookie of the Month for January.
This is the first time in ten years that a player was awarded both in one month. If you hadn't had a chance to see him play, you got to see him play live. He is worth the price of admission.

The other Houston choices were worse. I'm on record supporting 1836 as the best of the names they could get (Apollos? Gatos? Stars?)
Gatos was a choice? Oh god. How about Tacos? Or Pacos? Did those get votes?
They should have gone with another choice. The Toros would have been a good one. I would have tied in with the Texans mascot. That way he has work during the summer.
For those not in the know the Texans mascot is a bull by the name of Toro. Cool tie in, eh?
