Steve Czaban, local hack
Thursday, August 16, 2007
I am so tired of the misconceptions swirling around D.C. teams. This includes national sports writers who apparently don't read newspapers or watch TV, and still believe the preseason chatter about how the Nationals are the worst team in baseball (even though there are currently eight teams with worse records). This also includes know-nothing media types who talk about how covering the Caps is a waste of time. From Steve Czaban's blog:

Furthermore, and I’m not rubbing this in, but how about Ted’s hockey team DO SOMETHING for us to talk about!

Couldn't you say the same about the Redskins; after all, what have they done lately that's worth talking about? They won a pointless preseason game last weekend? Is last year's 5-11 season worth discussing?

Then there's comments like this:

But hey, I’m not here to brag, haggle over numbers, or to rip the owner of our hockey team that has a bona fide mega-star in Alex Ovetchkin surrounded by a bunch of extras from the movie “Slapshot.”

That Czabe. He's such a good sports reporter that he can't even spell a superstar's name right. Then again, he's too busy bragging about his readership, defending his listener numbers, or asking professional football players obnoxious questions. Never mind that there were already some good players on the team last season, as opposed to "Slapshot extras." (I guess he never heard of Alexander Semin.) If he'd have bothered to pay attention to the personnel additions over the summer, maybe he'd see that the Caps are trying to put a good team on the ice. Sure, there's no guarantee that they'll be successful, but the Caps weren't the worst team in the league last season with the guys they had; there's a good chance they'll make a run for the playoffs this year. But Czaban doesn't care; it's so much easier to ridicule hockey fans than to consider a different point of view.

Oh, I could spend all day picking apart his stupid blog post, but I don't have that kind of time. Not to mention that like the old playground days, it's unfair to pick on the slow kid.

Czaban's post reminded me of the time Homer Simpson invented a makeup gun--literally a shotgun that blasted makeup; when Marge pointed out that no woman wants a gun pointed at her face, Homer replied, "Women will like what I tell them to like." That seems to be Czabe's attitude. (I suppose this makes the Redskins the makeup gun. Not a terrible analogy.)

Skip! I so wish I thought of that. Best analogy ever! So true.

The really sad part is, Czaban's right.

The Redskins can draw 90K+ to their home games, have sold out every home game for over thirty years, and have a waiting list for season tickets long enough to refill the stadium more than twice despite just two playoff appearances in fourteen seasons.

I know you hate the Redskins but with stats like that doesn't it make sense that they would get the lions share of local attention?

I'd quibble with the "sellout" part: I know the past few Redskins games I've been to where they've played the Eagles, the stadium was at least 50% full of Philly fans. Sure, the Redskins sell out games, but with many of the opposing team's fans.

    Preach on, Sister Liz!

As for CapsNut, just ignore him. Jumping to the Redskins' defense completely misses the point of the article, but that's no surprise. And unless he allows comments on his own site (survey says: nope), comments he posts elsewhere are irrelevant.

I think you perfectly sum it all up there -- its not like the Redskins are winning the Superbowl, or even making the playoffs. So why is Czaban throwing stones at the Caps?

Actually it's rather simple. First of all us Redskins season ticket holders know that we can sell the Dallas, New York, and Philadelphia games w/o any problems. We also know that we can get enough $$$$$ from those games to pay for our entire season ticket package.

So thanks for supporting us and Dan Snyder!

Secondly, Redskins games aren't like Caps games. You know the Caps are going to sell out Pittsburgh, Philly, New York, and Detroit but when Atlanta or Tampa roll on in, you can walk up the night of the game and have your choice of where to sit. You can't do that with the Redskins, the entire season is sold out. If you want Caps season tickets, the number is 202-266-2277. Want Redskins season tickets, well get in line.

BTW Mike, where's your blog so I can leave innane comments like you just did...

Now come on, how can you not love the annual Redskins media ridiculousness? If Campbell completes a pass in the preseason suddenly that means they're going to the Super Bowl. Isn't it awesome!!!

And also ... you're really going to complain about the Skins when the Philly press is just as bad if not worse about the Eagles?

I thought if they lost every pre-season game the foreskins (Redskins) would win the Super Bowl. Now that they won a game what does that mean? Same piss poor excuses every year. Redskins the NYC Rangers of the NFL.

PS "Caps" Nut you should rename yourself Nut, after what you lack.

See, if I was a season ticket holder, I'd want to support my team at all the home games (especially since there aren't that many). Then again, if I was a Redskins fan, I suppose I would sell my seats to opposing NFC East fans and only go to games that the Redskins could possibly win. Makes sense to me!
